Whether you’re an athlete for your school, a weekend warrior, or member of a community team, it’s important to keep your mouth and teeth protected during physical activity. Something as simple as a mouthguard can help prevent injuries to your teeth, face, jaw, neck, and back. Store-bought mouthguards provide some amount of protection, but no mouthguard is better than one that was custom-made for your mouth by a dental professional like at New Bremen Smiles. We’ll take an impression of your teeth to create a perfectly form-fitted guard made from high-quality synthetic rubber. To learn more about the advantages of our custom-made mouthguards, contact our team at 419-954-8027 and schedule an appointment at our office today!

Protecting your smile while participating in sports activities is important. Mouth and jaw injuries are some of the most common types suffered by athletes, but mouthguards can help protect your teeth and gums. If you regularly take part in any sport with potential for contact, the American Dental Association recommends that you wear a mouthguard.

WHAT ARE MOUTHGUARDS?

Mouthguards are protective oral devices, usually made out of rubber, that fit across your teeth. Mouthguards are worn during sports or other events in which the teeth may be at risk of damage. They are especially helpful for those with orthodontic or bridgework.

THE BENEFITS OF CUSTOM-MADE MOUTHGUARDS

There are various types of mouthguards available today. Store-bought ready-made, or boil-and-bite mouthguards, do offer some protection; however, both of these options are less protective and less comfortable than custom-made mouthguards. Made by our dental professionals using an impression of your teeth, your custom-made mouthguard is designed to fit your teeth perfectly. This help keep it in securely in your mouth without falling out or causing discomfort. Our custom-made mouthguards are created using high-quality synthetic rubber for comfort and protective performance.

Protectiveness

Our custom-made mouthguards are designed to fit your teeth perfectly and are manufactured with high-quality synthetic rubber, making them much more comfortable and effective at protecting your mouth than store-bought alternatives. Mouthguards can help protect against:

  • Concussions and brain damage
  • Jaw dislocation and fractures
  • Fractured or lost teeth
  • Cuts or bruises to the mouth or face
  • Stress to the neck and back

Comfort

Since a custom-made mouthguard is created from a mold of your teeth, giving it a more comfortable fit than any store-bought alternative. With a mouthguard custom-made by our dental team at New Bremen Smiles, you’ll be able to breathe and speak easier, and you’ll hardly know you’re wearing a mouthguard at all.

THE BENEFITS OF CUSTOM-MADE MOUTHGUARDS

There are three basic types of mouthguards:

  • the pre-made mouthguard,
  • the “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguard,
  • the custom-made mouthguard

Be sure to pick a mouthguard that is tear-resistant, well fitted for your mouth and easy to keep clean. You’ll also want to make sure it does not prevent you from breathing properly during use. If you wear braces or a retainer, it can be incredibly important for you to wear a mouthguard to prevent damage to the inside of your mouth. Our dental team will show you how to properly wear your mouthguard and how to take care of it.

Nightguard

Many people experience teeth grinding while sleeping. Some may do this consciously during the day, but it more typically something that happens at night while sleeping. Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, flatten your smile, cause jaw pain and/or irritate your gums. If you grind your teeth, a mouthguard should be considered. The night guard, which is similar to, but smaller than a sports mouth guard, provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards are custom fitted for comfort and to allow for proper breathing.
