Why might I need a root canal?
You may require a root canal (also known as endodontic treatment) to save a damaged or decayed tooth when it’s inflamed or infected. Signs you might need a root canal, which involves removing infected tooth material, include:
- A deep cavity
- A fractured or cracked tooth
- Pain upon chewing
- A severe toothache
- Prolonged tooth sensitivity to cold or heat
- Tooth tenderness
- Discoloration
- Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
After careful examination and an x-ray of your tooth and mouth, Dr. Froning will let you know if a root canal is needed to save a damaged tooth and avoid removal. You’ll schedule a follow-up visit if a root canal is the right choice for you.
What should I expect during a root canal?
Prior to a root canal, the dentist will numb your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue so you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
A root canal involves drilling a small hole in your tooth, allowing the dentist to access the infected root. He uses special dental tools to remove decaying soft tissue in the inside of the tooth, cleaning and sterilizing the area before filling it back in with a special material. Finally, the tooth is sealed and the procedure is completed.
What should I expect after treatment?
After a root canal, your tooth may feel sensitive for a number of days. Dr. Froning can prescribe antibiotics to help prevent infection. You’ll also set up a follow-up visit after the procedure so he can examine your tooth and healing process.
Be sure to take care of your restored tooth by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, attending routine dental cleanings and tests, and using a protective mouthguard during contact sports and extreme exercises. With proper care, your tooth can last a lifetime.
