What are crowns and bridges?
Dental crowns and bridges replace missing, discolored, or damaged teeth. A crown fits over the top of your original tooth like a cap to improve its appearance. A bridge is made of crowns attached to a replacement tooth to bridge the gap of missing teeth and blend in perfectly with surrounding teeth.
What are the benefits of crowns and bridges?
Crown and bridges improve the function and appearance of teeth that are:
- Misshapen
- Cracked
- Chipped
- Discolored
- Missing
- Broken
- Weak or brittle
Receiving a crown or bridge is a common tooth restoration procedure. Dr. Geoffrey Froning can help you decide if either is right for you.
What should I expect during the procedure?
Crown and bridge placement is usually a two-step process. You can expect the following during your procedure:
Crown placement
During your first appointment, Dr. Geoffrey Froning assesses the extent of tooth damage. He will take x-rays of your teeth and schedule a root canal for an infected tooth, if necessary, prior to crown placement.
Dr. Froning will numb the area and file down your tooth to allow a crown to fit over it perfectly. He’ll take an impression of your teeth and send it to a dental lab where a new custom crown is created. You can receive a temporary crown to wear in the meantime.
During a follow-up appointment, our team will remove the temporary crown and cement a permanent crown in place, numbing the area to make sure you’re comfortable during the procedure.
Bridge placement
Having a bridge added is also a multiple-step process. Instead of making a mold of just one tooth to fit a crown, Dr. Froning will prepare two or more natural teeth surrounding a missing tooth, then make a mold of them for a perfect fit.
Like crowns, you will receive a temporary bridge to wear while the dental lab creates your permanent bridge. During your next appointment, your permanent bridge will be cemented into place, protecting the teeth and restoring your smile.
Dental bridges and crowns can last longer than a decade, as they are made of gold, alloys, porcelain, or combinations of these materials.
How should I care for crowns and bridges?
You’ll care for crowns and bridges as you would with natural teeth, by regularly brushing and flossing and attending dental visits.
